Introduction
The Stanley Theatre first opened as a movie theater on 27 Feb 1928, and was billed as “Pittsburgh’s Palace of Amusement.” Initial construction costs were $3 million. In 1977, DiCesare Engler Productions bought the Stanley to present rock and roll concerts through 1982, during which time Billboard Magazine proclaimed the venue as the “Number One Auditorium in the U.S.” One notable event at the Stanley was Bob Marley’s final concert on 23 Sept 1980. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust then purchased the Stanley for $12 million, and in turn invested another $43 million to restore the facility to its original 1928 baroque splendor. The Theater reopened on 25 Sept 1987 as the “Benedum Center for Performing Arts.” The building is now registered with the National Register of Historic Places, and is the current home to the Pittsburgh Opera, Pittsburgh Ballet and Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera.
