About the song
Andy Summers demo
Andy Summers recorded a demo for this song that didn't make in onto the Synchronicity box set release on 2024-07-26. The vocals of this demo however were used for the LP version.
Alternate version
The Synchronicity box features a 3:06 minutes mix that Hugh Padgham did in December 1982 at AIR Studios, which has the structure and basic instrumentation as the LP version. This version features additional synth drums before the first beat the LP version starts with. Andy then produces a funny sound with his voice, there's no oboe yet in this intro.
This early version features a completely different vocal take by Andy. His singing on the LP version is way more "crazy".
There's no wind instrument in later verses (I'm not sure if what's on the LP is a saxophone or the oboe again).
In this early version Andy plays some Fripp-style melodies over the final screaming parts.
Instrumental version
The box set also features an an 3:12 minutes instrumental that Hugh Padgham mixed at Le Studio in February 1983. It features even more additional synth drum beats than the Alternate version and otherwise sounds like the LP mix.
LP version
As Hugh Padgham remembers in "Studio Sound" from March 1984 they eventually used Andy's vocal track from his original demo for the 3:05 minutes LP version.
