Quotations and trivia
Recording started on 1992-08-10 and only took "2 months" or "8 weeks" which means recording might have been finished at the end of September 1992. Mixing took place at The Town House for two weeks.
They recorded at Lake House using a Sony 3348 with the newest software.
Sting had written 14 new songs, some with other musicians. Sting normally used his 1962 Fender Jazz Bass with a DI-Box. He took a double bass for She's Too Good For Me and a Fender Precision for If I Ever Lose My Faith In You.
David Sancious used a Yamaha KX88 master keyboard and an Atari computer. He used pedals to control various expanders, a Peavey Module, an E-mu Piano Module, a Roland D 50 and an old Yamaha TX rack.
Vinnie Colaiuta played Yamaha drums. They used a Neumann U 47 microphone for the bass drum, a Shure SM 57 for the snare, STC 4038 ribbon microphones for the cymbals and Yamaha MZ 203 and 104 for the toms. For If I Ever Lose My Faith In You two Neumann U 87 microphones were put in 4,5m distance to the drums.
Dominic Miller played Fernandez Strats and classical guitars with a Boss pedalboard and a Mesa Boogie amp standing in another room.
On the first day of recording they played If I Ever Lose My Faith In You five times. The bass was later replaced during mixing sessions at The Town House, as were some guitar parts. The only overdubs were a harmonica part by Sting, a Synclavier organ and some percussion parts played by Sting and Vinnie Colaiuta on an old Linn.
Sting's vocals were recorded using partitions from Audio Kinetics to create a "cabin". To record the vocals they used a Sony 800 G microphone that Hugh Padgham had borrowed from Sony, using a Demeter pre-amp and a Urei 1176 Limiter.
The Sony 800 G was also used for the Harmonica parts of If I Ever Lose My Faith In You.
After the first week of recording Hugh Padgham took a rough mix home, where he noticed that the overall sound featured too much bass. The reason for that had to do with the dining room at Lake House where they recorded. Hugh asked Bob Ludwig from Masterdisk for advice, who suggested to use Tubetraps. They eventually got about 30-40 Tubetrap cylinders which they positioned strategically inside the recording room.
The recorded songs were either checked with headphones or with two ATC SCM 20 monitors. They eventually decided to mix the songs outside of Lake House at The Town House.
