About the song
The song re-uses lyrics from Sting's Last Exit song Fool In Love.
The Police first recorded it on the very first day of the Outlandos d'Amour recording sessions - 1978-01-15. The band spliced together the two takes from that day on 1978-01-17. This 4:26 minute version is very different to the LP version. It's slightly faster and not as relaxed as the final version. Stewart's drums are a little busy in the verse - they sound like those from Born In The 50's ("My mother cried" ... part). His drums in the chorus don't yet have that famous snare / kick finish.
There's no guitar solo in this version - you hear a rather bad harmonica solo instead. There are also gimmicks that were intended to be funny - it's either a kazoo or someone repeating "beep-beep" several times after each chorus. There are bits to like, but it was a good idea to re-record the song.
The version we all know was probably recorded on 1978-04-01 (backing track) and 1978-04-02 (vocals). There's yet a third version of this song - it's the LP version with Sting yelling and Stewart's count-in at the start.

Well, someone told me yesterday That when you throw your love away You act as if you don't care You look as if you're going somewhere But I just can't convince myself I couldn't live with no one else And I can only play that part And sit and nurse my broken heart, so lonely So lonely, so lonely, so lonely So lonely, so lonely, so lonely So lonely, so lonely, so lonely So lonely, so lonely Now no-one's knocked upon my door For a thousand years, or more All made up and nowhere to go Welcome to this one man show Just take a seat, they're always free No surprise, no mystery In this theatre that I call my soul I always play the starring role, so lonely So lonely, so lonely, so lonely So lonely, so lonely, so lonely So lonely, so lonely, so lonely So lonely, so lonely So lonely So lonely, so lonely, so lonely So lonely, so lonely, so lonely I feel lonely, I'm so lonely, I feel so low I feel lonely, I'm so lonely, I feel so low
