Gordon Sumner played with the Phoenix Jazzmen in small clubs. It was in this band that bandleader Gordon Solomon christened him Sting as he was wearing a black / yellow jumper.

No exact concert dates with Sting are known - in the November 28, 1973 issue Courier mentions that the band plays at the Hawthorn Inn in Benwell on Tuesdays.
