Trivia
The Police arrived at the venue in separate cars around 4:15pm. The soundcheck started at 4:35pm.
Andy Summers played "Freude schöner Götterfunken" (Ode to joy) on his guitar, being accompanied by Sting and Stewart Copeland for a very short time.
Together with Elvis Costello and his band The Police rehearsed the songs they would perform at the TV taping on 2008-08-06 at the Apollo. Sunshine Of Your Love was played three times until everybody was satisfied with the structure and performance. Then they all played a combination of Costello's Watching The Detectives and Walking On The Moon a few times. The problem was finding the right way to blend those two songs together. At one point Sting addressed Stewart: "Stewart, why don't you - and I don't believe I'm actually asking you this - why don't you one of your big Copeland fills there...?" They worked it out and began playing Purple Haze around 5:05pm. The soundcheck ended at 5:15pm.
Immediately after the soundcheck Stewart Copeland met nutters backstage. Andy Summers was joined by his sons and their friends.
The concert itself was pure joy. After joining Elvis Costello for Alison, Sting later reappeared together with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers during Elvis' last song (What's So Funny About Peace, Love And Understanding). The Police were dressed as Elvis Costello including suits, wigs and glasses. They fooled around a bit with their guitars and danced, then left the stage.
It was clear from then on that this concert would be something special.
The Police opened their set like they always did. But there were so many variations in the set (mainly Sting's singing) that it was much more fun than any other 2008 concert. De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da started as Doh Wah Diddy with bits of Da Doo Ron Ron in the middle. Sting talked a lot, joked a lot. Andy kicked CHA! balls a lot. When a CHA! ball finally hit Sting's microphone during Can't Stand Losing You Sting couldn't help himself but laugh and add a tiny "Cha" after the next line he had to sing.
Purple Haze was the first encore. So Lonely became a longer version of Been Down So Long. Sting played Next To You without his shirt.
Everbody present was sure that this was the best concert of The Police they've ever seen. Probably not the best music ever played, but best entertainment value...
