"Flexible Strategies" is a song written by Andy Summers, Sting and Stewart Copeland and recorded by The Police in 1981.

About the song

The Message In A Box liner notes provide some information - apparently The Police were at Le Studio when the record company asked them to record a b-side. They did a ten-minute jam, and obviously some Andy overdubs to produce this song.

Personnel

Hugh Padgham is not credited as producer, it was probably Nick Blagona on the knobs.

Quotations and trivia

  • Sting: "We jammed it in ten minute when we were working on Ghost, in Canada."
  • Stewart: "Word came down from the marketing machine 'Create a B-side - today!' We walked over to the gear, strapped on, and played for 10 minutes. A disgrace."
  • Andy Summers: "The B side on the single " Every Little Thing", "Flexible Strategies", is a funk tune that's basically built around one chord, like an Am or something. I'm playing a hard funk rhythm, and then there's a long guitar solo that goes virtually all the way through the song, which is like totally against the harmony that's being played. It's sort of atonal. The sound is searing, and the notes are somewhere else. It's all like Ebs and Bs against an A chord and an F#. It just works really well, which I found interesting. In a way it seems to be the area James Blood Uler is moving into."
