The 1961 Stratocaster
Artist: Andy Summers
Band or ensemble: The Police / Andy Summers
Time gear used: YYYY - YYYY

Introduction

Andy Summers bought his 1961 (?) Fender Stratocaster during an early US tour with The Police while being in Austin, TX, USA (it might have been the 1979-10-31 date). It became his second main guitar onstage with the US tour in January 1980.

The guitar is featured in the I Advance Masked video.

Gear breakdown

By 1982-02-12 the lower tone knob of the guitar was missing (it was still in place at 1982-01-15) and the pickguard was broken at the top (where he used to squeeze a pick in).

In 1986 a piece of the pickguard was missing - bottom right when you look at the guitar.

Fender made copies of the Stratocaster for Andy which he used during the band's reunion tour - those had a built-in booster.

A 2017 photo shows the original guitar with a "new" pickguard and tone knob.
